TORA’s “Be the Way You Are”, directed by Connor Duke, follows a man paralysed by a fear of the water and haunted by visions of drowning in a violent storm. A girl in the pool approaches him and reassures him that the fear is all in his head. Gradually, he begins to believe her.
With newfound confidence, and under pressure to let go, he turns his back towards the water, closes his eyes and falls in. Beneath the surface, there is a brief moment of peace and weightlessness before panic suddenly takes over. Overcoming the fear psychologically has not changed the reality that he still cannot swim.
The video becomes a thoughtful metaphor for relationships and social pressure that push people to become something they are not, rather than allowing them to simply be the way they are.
